Google AI Essentials — Where I'd Start if I Could Do It Over

If I could go back in time and tell myself to start with one resource, it would be this. Google's AI Essentials course is completely free, requires zero technical background, and covers all the fundamentals: what AI is, how it works, how to use it effectively, and what to watch out for.

It's available on Coursera through Google's Grow with Google program. You can go at your own pace and there are hands-on exercises so you're not just watching videos. This is the closest thing to "AI 101" that exists.

What the course covers

What AI actually is

No buzzwords — plain English explanation of AI, machine learning, and generative AI

How to write effective prompts

The basics of communicating with AI tools to get useful results

OpenAI Academy — Learn AI by Using AI

OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) has their own free learning platform. What makes it unique is that some of the exercises happen directly inside ChatGPT — so you're learning by doing, not just reading.

I'd recommend doing this after (or alongside) the Google course. Google gives you the foundations; OpenAI Academy gives you hands-on practice with the most popular AI tool on the planet.

Both Google AI Essentials and OpenAI Academy are completely free. No credit card, no trial period, no catch. These are the two best free AI education resources I've found.

Getting Started with Claude (Anthropic)

Claude is the AI I use the most, and it's what powers Claude Code (the coding tool I covered in another category). But you don't need to be a developer to use Claude — the web chat interface at claude.ai is incredibly good for everyday tasks like writing, analysis, brainstorming, and learning.

Claude is made by Anthropic, and in my experience it's especially good at detailed explanations, following complex instructions, and giving nuanced answers (less "generic AI" feeling). The free tier is enough to get started.

Claude.ai main interface
Claude's web interface — clean, simple, and ready to use immediately

Quick start

1

Go to claude.ai and create a free account

2

Start a conversation — Claude is ready immediately, no setup needed

3

Try it: "Explain what an API is like I'm 10 years old" — see how naturally it explains things

4

Upload a file (PDF, image, code) and ask Claude to analyze it — this is where it really shines

What Claude is especially good at

Long, detailed explanations

Ask it to break down complex topics and it'll give you thorough, well-organized answers.

Following specific instructions

Give it a detailed prompt with constraints and it follows them precisely.

Code & technical help

Really strong at explaining code and helping you debug problems.

Document analysis

Upload a PDF and ask questions about it. Great for research and learning.

Harvard CS50 AI — Go Deeper (When You're Ready)

This one's for when you've got the basics down and want to actually understand how AI works under the hood. Harvard's CS50 AI course is completely free online, and it's one of the most popular computer science courses in the world.

Fair warning: this is a university-level course and assumes some Python familiarity. But if you're the kind of person who wants to know "why" and not just "how," this is incredibly rewarding. It covers search algorithms, machine learning, neural networks, and natural language processing — the actual concepts behind tools like ChatGPT and Claude.

Search algorithms — How AI finds solutions (the foundation of everything)

Machine learning — How AI learns from data

Neural networks — The technology behind modern AI

Natural language processing — How AI understands and generates text

Don't start here

Seriously — start with the other three resources in this section first. This course is amazing but it's a commitment. Get comfortable using AI tools first, then dive into understanding how they work when you're ready for the next level.
